Sports crowds are the easiest audience for participation technology and the least forgiving environment to run it in.

Why the audience is easy

They arrived expecting to shout. The social permission that a conference host spends two minutes constructing is already there before you do anything — a stadium crowd will make noise on request from a standing start, which is not true of any other room.

They are also already used to whole-crowd formats. Waves, chants, kiss cams, sections competing against each other. You are not introducing a new idea, you are supplying a better version of something they do anyway.

Why the venue is hard

Scale. A camera that can see a whole stand is a different proposition to one covering a ballroom. Realistically you read a section rather than the venue, and tell that section they are the ones playing — which works fine and is arguably better, because it creates the rivalry.

Light. Daytime fixtures are the best conditions this technology ever gets. Night fixtures under floodlights are also good, since the crowd is genuinely lit. It is indoor arenas with show lighting that cause trouble.

Weather. An outdoor camera position needs to survive rain and wind. Wind matters more than people expect: a camera that moves is a camera that reads the whole crowd as moving.

Time. Half-time is a hard boundary. There is no option to overrun, and no option to spend two minutes calibrating while the clock runs.

The format that fits

Section versus section. It exploits an existing rivalry, needs one sentence of explanation, and produces a result everybody can see. Loudness works if you have a microphone; movement works better if you have a camera, because it survives a PA that is already loud.

Keep it to ninety seconds and end it decisively. A half-time activity that is still going when the teams come out is a failure regardless of how well it worked.

Practical notes

  • Calibrate before the crowd is fully in, then again just before you run it — a stand fills unevenly.
  • Put the big screen where the section you are reading can actually see it. Obvious; frequently wrong.
  • Assume the PA is louder than the crowd and position any microphone accordingly.
